MASUR BIRCH BY THE SEA

In 1993, a plantation of masur birch was established on the farm

The plantation covers 12 decares (3 acres), with up to 2,800 trees initially planted. This was part of a collaboration between Reiersøl Nursery, Lyngdal Nursery, and Agder University College, introducing micropropagation of masur birch plants in Norway. At the time, this practice was new to the country, as it was primarily being used in Finland and Sweden. Micropropagation ensures that the genetic material remains identical in new plants and trees, preserving the uniformity of the wood.

Our masur birch originates from Reiersøl Nursery and is classified as the Aust-Agder clone TA 11. It descends from a stem-forming mother tree that is 45 years old, grown at an elevation of 30 meters above sea level, and features the characteristic flame structure in its wood. The advantage of this mother tree is that it becomes harvest-ready after just 50 years.

Wood for the Norwegian Furniture Industry

Today, we maintain the plantation to the best of our ability, investing significant time in thinning to ensure optimal growth conditions. This has already resulted in the felling of some trees that are ready for processing. Over time, the refinement of the plantation will become the next major project for the farm.

Our ambition is to process the plantation for reuse in Norwegian furniture production, as well as in hunting and outdoor knives. And yes, masur birch also makes beautiful cutting boards!
